This is a short documentary insight into kanna - the traditional Japanese blade and plane for handcrafting wooden furniture, through the eyes of designer, craftsman and artist Fred Dodson. Fred honed his skills using kanna to work with wood out in Japan in an apprenticeship under master craftsman Toshio Tokunaga, with a hope of one day bringing this home to the West. I visited Fred in his workshop (TATARA Workshop) near Bristol and spent time observing the meticulous care and passion for the craft that has led him to create a growing body of beautiful pieces of hand finished work. Shot, directed and edited by Marcus Crocker.
